When AI Stops Us Thinking: Why Africa Needs More Philosophy, Not Less

Artificial Intelligence has quickly become part of everyday life. Students use it to draft assignments. Professionals rely on it to generate reports.

Artificial Intelligence has quickly become part of everyday life. Students use it to draft assignments. Professionals rely on it to generate reports. Governments are beginning to develop policies to regulate it. Across Africa, conversations about AI often focus on innovation, productivity, automation and economic growth. Yet there is a deeper question we rarely ask:

What happens when AI becomes so convenient that we stop thinking for ourselves? That was the central challenge raised by AI ethics researcher and University of Johannesburg lecturer Nasreen Watson during her conversation on African Discoveries, powered by the UJ Methods Lab. Rather than discussing AI as simply another technological advancement, Watson invited us to consider its impact on our humanity, our education systems, our values and ultimately our ability to think critically.

AI is Not the Discovery. Human Thinking Is.

One of the most fascinating moments of the discussion came from an experiment Watson conducted with her first-year philosophy students. She asked them to draw themselves as machines. The responses were surprisingly revealing. Students sketched steering wheels, laptops, toasters and other everyday technologies. More importantly, when asked to describe themselves, many did so almost entirely through measurable outputs:

"I am a 97% student."

"I am an athlete."

"I achieve results."

Very few described themselves as curious, creative, compassionate or even confused. For Watson, this was more than an interesting classroom exercise. It reflected a worrying trend in modern society. We increasingly define ourselves by productivity rather than humanity. In a world where AI promises instant answers, people are becoming conditioned to value outcomes over understanding. The danger is not that AI thinks for us. The danger is that we gradually stop asking why.

Philosophy Has Become More Relevant Than Ever

Many people assume philosophy belongs in history books while AI belongs in computer science laboratories. Watson argues the opposite. The more advanced technology becomes, the more society needs philosophy. Artificial intelligence can generate answers within seconds, but it cannot determine whether those answers are ethical, truthful or socially responsible. Those questions remain deeply human.

Critical thinking, logical reasoning and ethical reflection are not outdated skills. They are becoming essential digital skills. Without them, people risk accepting AI-generated information simply because it appears polished and confident. As Watson noted during the conversation, confidence should never be confused with truth.

The AI Policy That Taught South Africa an Important Lesson

The discussion became especially timely when Watson reflected on South Africa's withdrawn national AI policy draft. Reports revealed that sections of the document contained fabricated academic references generated through AI hallucinations.

Ironically, a document intended to guide ethical AI governance had itself fallen victim to one of AI's most well-known weaknesses. For Watson, the incident represented something much larger than a technical mistake. It exposed weaknesses in academic verification, institutional oversight and digital literacy. AI did not fail alone. People failed to question its outputs.

The lesson here is simple but powerful: AI should never replace human judgment. It should strengthen it.

African AI Cannot Simply Copy the Rest of the World

Another major theme throughout the interview was Africa's place within global AI development. Much of today's AI infrastructure has been developed using datasets, assumptions and cultural perspectives originating outside Africa. As a result, African experiences, languages and knowledge systems remain significantly underrepresented.

Watson challenged the idea that Africa should simply adopt AI systems and governance models designed elsewhere. Instead, she argued that African societies should develop frameworks rooted in their own philosophies, histories and realities.

This includes recognising that African communities often prioritise relationships, collective wellbeing and shared responsibility in ways that differ from more individualistic Western approaches. If AI is going to shape Africa's future, Africa must also help shape AI.

Why Language Matters

One of the most practical concerns raised during the conversation involved African languages. Large language models perform remarkably well in widely represented global languages. Yet many African languages remain poorly supported because they are underrepresented within digital datasets.

Watson explained that this creates a significant educational challenge. Students who already navigate higher education in a second or third language face an additional barrier when AI systems struggle to understand their linguistic realities.

The issue extends beyond translation. Language carries identity, culture and ways of thinking. An AI system that cannot meaningfully engage African languages cannot fully understand African knowledge.

Ubuntu as an AI Framework

Perhaps the most uniquely African contribution discussed during the episode was the potential role of Ubuntu in AI governance. Rather than viewing Ubuntu as a slogan, Watson considers it a possible ethical framework capable of informing future AI policy.

Ubuntu asks different questions from many existing technological frameworks. Instead of asking only whether technology is efficient, it also asks:

  • Does it benefit the community?
  • Does it preserve human dignity?
  • Does it strengthen relationships?
  • Does it contribute to collective wellbeing?

These questions may become increasingly important as AI continues reshaping education, workplaces and public institutions.

Watson was equally careful to acknowledge that Ubuntu should not simply be romanticised. Like any philosophical framework, it must be critically examined, tested and refined through research.

Universities Should Teach Thinking Before Technology

Perhaps Watson's most unexpected position concerned higher education. She does not believe universities should ban AI. Nor does she believe students should avoid using it. Instead, universities should redesign learning around stronger foundations in logic, reasoning, ethics and critical thinking.

Technology will continue evolving at extraordinary speed. Today's AI tools will soon be replaced by newer ones. But the ability to question information, evaluate evidence and construct sound arguments remains timeless.

Rather than teaching students how to use a specific AI platform, universities should equip them with the intellectual tools to evaluate any technology they encounter throughout their careers.

Africa's AI Future Depends on Its People

Despite highlighting numerous challenges, Watson's perspective remained remarkably optimistic. She rejected narratives suggesting AI will inevitably replace human beings. Instead, she described AI as a tool—one whose value depends entirely on how people choose to use it.

For young Africans, this means developing digital literacy alongside critical thinking. For universities, it means integrating ethics across disciplines rather than treating AI as purely technical. For governments, it means creating policy frameworks that reflect African realities instead of importing solutions wholesale. And for society more broadly, it means refusing to surrender human judgment to algorithms.

In closing, artificial intelligence is often presented as a technological revolution. The conversation suggested something different. The real revolution is philosophical. As AI becomes increasingly capable of generating information, writing text and solving problems, the most valuable human skill may no longer be finding answers. It may be asking better questions.

Nasreen Watson reminds us that Africa's future in AI will not be determined solely by faster computers or more sophisticated algorithms. It will depend on whether Africans continue to think critically, question boldly and build technologies grounded in their own values. Because ultimately, responsible AI is not just about intelligent machines. It is about intelligent societies.
